The Saturday morning yelling in my apartment building appeared at about 6 am, I am quite sure about the time because I cheeked the electronic clock on kitchen window sill a couple minutes after calling the 911. A male yelled “Help!”, “Leave me!”, and “Get out of here!”. The terrible voice was loud enough to break my, and maybe all residents’ weekend dream.

The man kept yelling, made loud noise by punching or kicking on the wall. It seemed some people were forcing him to leave the building. Believe me, in a dark room alone and struggling with drowsiness, the noise and words sounded horror. “What happened?” I asked myself, wondering whether the man was being beaten, robbed, or kidnapped. .

Getting up with sleepwear, bleary-eyed, I started to look for my cell phone in the dark room. I did not turn on the lights because somebody had said the lights might make your “enemies” recognize your position and I did not want to be criminals’ target, if the crime really happened. I also felt a little scared, nervous, and just kept pushing cell phone’s “talk” button instead of the “power” first in about five seconds!

“Calm down, Ivan. Be cool.” I talked to myself, and dialed the 911. I told the policewoman what I had heard, saying I saw nothing for did not want to be out in such situation.

It was 6:12 am after handing up the phone. I waited in the dark, tried to review all steps I had done in the past ten minutes and what I should do next. “Can I write a story on this, if there is crime? I am a journalist after all.”

What details I need for my story and what should be the lead? “A man was seriously beaten (or robbed/kidnapped) in Convent Gardens, Central West End, on Saturday morning …” I could not help waiting for the cops and interview them. I would also need the background of the building and the neighborhood, find out whether the similar cases waere frequent here or just occasional.

I dressed up but since no cop knocked at my door or called me in 30 minutes, I decided to go out to do my job, with pan, notepad, digital recorder and business cards.

(corridor)

The corridor was quite. Most residents must stay in the rooms or continue their sleep. An Africa American resident stopped the elevator going down at the fourth floor, I asked whether he had heard the yelling and what happened. He said he also heard the terrible, loud screaming around 6am, saying that somebody was beaten by the people came into the building.

(front door, only the residents have keys can open it)

I opened the front door at first floor and it was dawn. Two police cars parking right outside the front foor but nobody inside. I waited for a while, then two cops with a young teenager walked out of the parking lord. The boy, with a white box in his hand, was obviously beaten black and blue.

I walked to the police and told them I had made the emergency call. “What happened here, sir?” I asked, “Is this a safe building to live in?”

“It is always safe,” the elder police said, adding the yelling was boy’s own business. “It is only between them.”

The thin young guy shorter than me looked like still in shock. “I am sorry.” He told me before entering the police car.

Now everything was over but I had no time to continue my dream again. The MPI (Mid-American Press Institute) Conference would begin at 8 am and it was the time for breakfast. Overall, the good news fwere that the building “is safe to live in” and nobody got seriously hurt; while the bad news was my “breaking news” had gone.
