After the first two-week training sessions and setting in the newsroom, busy days finally came.

(From the evaluation form at the bottom, we can easily find out what I have gained recently and what should do more next.)

The most exciting thing in the past three weeks, of course, was reading my first column and first story on the Post-dispatch. And most interesting things, beyond any expectations, were the meetings with the senior staffs of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform and the Democratic Leadership Council. It was the first time I had chance to talk with people involved in American local politics and the documents they provided me were good enough to start my research on this topic.

(BTW, the Illinois campaign's purpose is to limit political donation in the state by making new laws. According to their introduction, Illinois is one of few states in the U.S. did not have law to restrict people's donation, which had been giving ways to corruption for years.)

To improve my understanding in investigative reporting, I talked with Post's investigative reporter and followed him in the interviews. I am trying to understand his working procedure and hope can shadow him till the end of the August. Since he is still working on the story and I just started the observation, I am sorry for not having more details to share, except this: shadowing some experienced colleagues, making good friends with them, and working for them even with you own time, then what you learned will beat your previous targets.

Meanwhile, I started the first few steps on social networking: created my Facebook, and, last night, established a Blogs-circle call “Online Media Lab” at Netease. Netease is one of the biggest blog service provider in China and I guess there are more than one million blogs on its servers. I hope through the new circle people – especially the journalists – interested in online journalism can share information about online media and maybe sometime work together.

Yesterday I told Elisa that when I was busy, I could feel how quickly the time flied stealthily. And I can even foresee it will be much quicker next: I was invited to visit Bloomington and Chicago in the coming two weeks and will be in FL. for two weeks in June. More appointments, meeting with local Chinese newspaper editors, local Chinese community leaders, church pastors, our online/business editors, political reporters, and writing coach will be added to my schedule. Do I look like an octopus, always extending all feelers and grab everything touched only if it is related to the "goals"?

Detailing the "Fellowship Goals" was absolutely a good idea because now it is the main direction for my life/work in STL. To attain the aims I listed, I can make my schedule completely occupied, if I want. But of course I won't do that because I need sometime to enjoy the blues at the Blueberry Hill, with the toasted revioli.
